Photophysical Characterization of Novel Neutral and Cationic Phthalocyanine-like Photodynamic Agents Abstract

We report on the photophysical properties of novel neutral and cationic tetrapyridinoporphyrazines. These compounds are interesting as potential photosensitizers for inactivation of bacteria. Neutral pyridinoporphyrazines show photophysical properties comparable to those of typical metallophthalocyanines. The cationic derivatives are partially aggregated in organic solvents, but can
be monomerized using aqueous detergents (SDS 0.1 M) or binding the central metal cation axially to pyridine. The triplet and singlet oxygen quantum yields range from 0.3 to 0.7.
