PHOTOSENSITIZED MEMBRANE DAMAGE: SINGLE CHANNEL INACTIVATION AND LEAK CONDUCTANCE. Lars Kunz and Günther Stark.

This is a very nice demonstration of the block of ion channels by photosensitization and the subsequent increase in membrane leakiness that may be important in several subsequent cellular responses to photo- modification. I'm interested in your proposal that block of the 3 ion channels that you studied, as well as the increase in membrane leak conductance are all due to a common process, namely lipid peroxidation. Is the time course of block the same for all 3 channels? Since leak conductance increases after channel block, how do you explain the delay? Is a greater level of lipid peroxidation required for the development of leakiness?
